What To Do On Your Luxury Holiday To Japan And China
Yet beneath the brash modernity beats an ancient heart.
This is still the realm of the exquisite art of the geisha and the skill of the sumo wrestler; where ancient festivals are celebrated and food is elevated to an art form. And Japan is still a land of great natural beauty, from the snow festivals and lavender farms of the northern isle of Hokkaido to the sun-drenched beaches of the subtropical south.
Whether you choose to climb Mount Fuji or relax at volcanic hot spring resorts, Japan is unforgettable.
China's social riches and 5,000 years of tumultuous history place it among the world's greatest travel destinations. The Great Wall, X'ian's Terracotta Army, the Forbidden Palace and Tiananmen Square: the very names reverberate with history and legend. From acrobatics to martial arts, calligraphy to Chinese opera, the vibrant, distinctive culture of this great land is everywhere to be seen.
China's capital, Beijing, is facing great investment in both tourism infrastructure and historical renovation due to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Shanghai is another favourite, as one of the world's largest cities and one of China's most famous.
European-style architecture, traditional Chinese buildings and sleek modern developments all co-exist in this cosmopolitan metropolis.
Exploring Asia is the perfect way to escape and discover an ancient culture that is so different to anything you've experienced before.

Japan: Indian restaurants and Immigration trends
Most people are frightened by change. Growing up in San Francisco, my grandmother was concerned about Chinese moving out of Chinatown: "They are buying up the neighborhood." A working-class friend when I was a teenager had similar views: "When I was a little kid, this entire neighborhood was white." I was always unsure how to respond to such fear of change with undertones of racism.
Ethnic restaurants help us to unscientifically track trends in immigration. Mexican food aficionados who traveled around the United States in the 1960 and 1970s could find delectable Mexican food in California and from Texas across through the Southwest. Naturally, Mexican food was available in major cities, but you could not find Mexican food everywhere the way you could find Italian food. Chinese food was spreading across the United States in the 1960s and 1970s as Chinese immigration continued and the immigrants moved outside areas where Chinese immigrants had traditionally lived. Fast forward to 2009 and you can find Mexican food almost everywhere in the United States.
Move across the globe to Japan and you will find Indian restaurants, run by Indians, starting to pop up in medium size cities across Japan. Given that India and Japan do not share a land border, the Indian presence and number of Indian restaurants in Japan will probably not rival the Mexican presence and number of restaurants in the United States. Still, using our unscientific ethnic restaurant information, we can see that Indian immigration to Japan is increasing, showing us what the future holds.
Most Japanese speaking of immigration are caught between what they think they need and what they think they want. Japanese think they need immigrants to replace the Japanese babies who are not being born. They think they need immigrants to manufacture products in the factories and in health care to help care for the aged. Japan, with an area approximately the size of California, has about 120 million people. Japan has greatly underused human resources in the form of senior citizens and women who are unemployed or underemployed because the system does not recognize their value. Were Japan to better utilize the current human resources, Japan might not need immigrants.
Many Japanese think that they do not want immigrants. Many Japanese would like to keep their "homogenous" society. Yet Japan is stagnating, stuck in the same rut since the bubble burst in the 1980s. Some fresh blood may be what Japan needs to become reinvigorated. Whenever I drive past a new Indian restaurant, I see the future coming. When we look back in 20 or 30 years, we will see changes. Maybe new immigrants will make Japan a more vibrant and open society. Or we may see a Japan of haves and have-nots with an ever-growing underclass of Japanese and immigrants left behind to grow poorer and more hostile. I hope we see the latter - a new open Japan - with a landscape of Indian, Thai, Vietnamese, Brazilian and Chinese restaurants. For ethnic restaurants show us the path to the future.

Tips for Italy Travel
Located in Southern Europe, Italy is a peninsula extending into the central Mediterranean Sea, northeast of Tunisia. When traveling to Italy it is important to remember that you are not at home, so always be respectful and conservative.
WEATHER AND CLOTHING
In general the weather is very hot and steaming in the dead of the summer. We recommend that you wear light clothing. Be sure to have sunglasses, hat and sunblock, as they are essential. Afternoon thunderstorms (brief) are common in Rome and inland cities, so you may want to consider bringing an umbrella. It is essential to follow dress standards (no bare shoulders or knees) and is strictly enforced in many churches, especially in Rome at St. Peter's and the Vatican Museums and at the Basilica di San Marco in Venice.
SAFETY
Remember to protect yourself against purse-snatchers and pickpockets. It is recommended that you wear a money belt or a pouch on a string around your neck, both concealed. When you have to carry a purse make sure that is around your neck and tucked between your body and arm. A word of caution: "gypsy" children are widespread in Rome, are skilled pickpockets that are quick, and know more tricks than you do.
TELEPHONES
Since hotel tend to overcharge for long distance and international calls. It is best to make such calls from public phones, using telephone cards. For general information in English dial 176. To place international telephone calls via operator assisted service, dial 170 or long distance access numbers. The country code for Italy is 39.
If you are in need of additional information or have found what you are looking for. We suggest that you complete an internet search for additional information.
Have a safe and enjoyable trip to Italy!

Havant & Waterlooville Tourist Information & Travel Guide
The main shopping area is the Meridian Shopping Centre which opened in 1991 after construction that took place in 1987. It has many large retail stores within the complex such as Wilkinson, Argos, WHSmith, to name a few. The shopping centre has a library and most of the larger stores are found on the ground floor alongside independent fashion retailers.
As Havant is a coastal town, it encompasses a wide range of water sports and leisure facilities. Whether you are looking to relax or take part in activities, Havant is filled with beautiful beaches and countryside. The most popular of these is Hayling Island which is undoubtedly a more traditional British seaside resort. Here you can find areas of grass where visitors can get comfortable and enjoy a picnic. The grass separates the beach from the road and also acts as a safety net for children.
Also found at Hayling Island is Funland Amusement Park. It is operational from March to October and has all the rides needed for a family fun packed day out. Rides include, the Log Flume, Tornado, Pirate Ship, Train and many more, not to mention two Roller Coasters. There are takeaways and café’s where you can relax whilst watching the rides from a distance. To get here you via public transport, you can catch bus number 30 from Havant Bus Station and get off at Beachlands.
For a more cultural experience of Havant & Waterlooville, there is a wide choice of theatres and museums to visit. Havant Museum is a historic trip through the foundations of the town going back to the ancient times until modern day. Many exhibitions are held here accompanied by local displays, which look at the daily lives of local residents, with focus on the past century. The display showcases schools, wartime, churches and local industries such as glove making.
Havant Museum also has an aquarium to commemorate and educate visitors about the fishing industry with relation to Langstone Harbour. Displays are found in the building, including the work of William Grant who is widely known for his watercolour collection. Visitors are also told about Hayling Billy and reasons why it made its last run.
The Havant Arts Centre has a diverse range of entertainment to offer visitors. There are theatre shows, workshops, comedy nights, food events, talks, dance and much more. To accompany this, there is a restaurant called Red Mango that offers lunch, buffets and alcohol for conference based events. The restaurant can be hired for parties, shows and classes.

Live Like A King In Marrakech
Live like a King in Marrakech
With so many fine tailor made holidays to Morocco available, you will have a wealth of options to choose from if you plan to visit. By making the right choices you will experience some of the very finest places and activities in North Africa or, indeed, the world. To make sure your journey really is one fit for a King make sure to include the following in your itinerary;
The Old Souk & the Djemaa el Fna
Marrakech is home to the largest Souk, or traditional market, in Morocco and it is here that you will find the choicest and most intriguing cultural items for sale. There seem to be an almost limitless diversity of curios to browse, and the Souk itself is large enough to warrant hours of wandering between the brightly coloured stalls. If something takes your fancy in this wondrous bazaar (as it inevitably will), remember that the quoted price will be wildy optimistic on the part of the salesman and, far from being an insult, is an invitation to enjoy the art of haggling. Stepping out of the Souk, you will come upon the festive Djemaa el Fna, the central square of Marrakech and filled with all forms of entertainment, from story tellers to dancing boys to snake charmers. No luxury holidays are complete without an evening spent enjoying the diversions of this famous place.
Real Moroccan Cuisine
Marrakech the perfect place to try real Moroccan cuisine. For those with an adventurous palate the real treats include the delectable pastille, or sweet pigeon pie, filled with a succulent vegetable purée and the particularly flavoursome dessert of strawberries wrapped in wafer thin pastry and rolled in ground almonds. If you don’t have time to make it to one of the city’s many restaurants, do still make sure to try as many local dishes as you can. You will often not have far to go as many of the luxury hotels have excellent restaurants on site.
Royal Golf de Marrakech
At the foot of the Atlas mountains lies the famed Royal golf course of Marrakech. Fringed by cypress, eucalyptus, palm, olive, orange and apricot trees, these links are as respected for their beauty as their design. With a Caddy being a mandatory requirement and even tailor made holidays available based solely around the course, the Royal Golf has established itself as an exclusive experience that touches the very heights of luxury.
Jardin Majorelle
Also built in the grand days of the 1920’s are the delicate Majorelle Gardens. Tinged with verdant greens and ceramics of cobalt blue there are few finer examples of North African horticulture. Open to the public since 1947, one does not have to be a king to feel like one in this ornate and teeming place.

The Island of Isla Mujeres
The town is filled with shopping malls, amazing beaches and restaurants. Once all the day visitors leave, the island literally falls asleep. If you are looking for a relaxing place to visit Isla Mujeres is the best place to go. Shop before 6pm however because the merchants close shop.
The island has a history that will impress you. Marauding buccaneers and pirates frequented this island at one time. During the 15th century Francisco Hermandex, a Spanish butcher came to the isle looking for slaves in which he would put to work in his Cuban mines. According to history Spanish people were working to destroy the native population.
The island was dubbed the “Isle of Women” because all slaves found were statues. The statues were of women. Mayan Legend tells us that the island was used for Mayan fertility, where ceremonies took place. The older generation of people on the island are from the Mayan descents and these people can fill you in on the details.
Isla Mujeres has been recently populated, filled with anglers. Then the construction of Cancun took place, which opened more opportunities. The builders worked along the Mayan Riviera. Today people enjoy visiting the island to enjoy time on the beach. There are several hotels for lodging, including five star hotels. Many of the hotels are near the ferry docks.
In two hours, visitors can walk on every single street in Isla. Many of the islanders use golf carts to ride around the town. Some of the people use bore motorcycles, mopeds, scooters and trucks and cars of course. Once you get off the ferry, you are in the town of Isla.
On the left side of the area are sandy beaches, stores and dining areas. The tourist zone is in this area too. Some of the popular places to visit are the Calles Street, which runs east to west in downtime. It intersects however with other streets where you will find shopping malls and dining. Hidalgo Avenue is a tourist street, which is made of cobblestone where pedestrians walk along the road past restaurants and boutiques.
Whilst Isla Mujeres is a small island, it has plenty of restaurants where seafood is served each day. Anglers bring in fresh seafood daily and the prices are quite cheap.
Children will enjoy eating hot dogs, hamburgers, pizza and other tasty food while you dine at the restaurants. The restaurants are near town. Supermarkets are nearby on the east side of Isla. Mexican food is served hot at the small restaurants all over town.
If you are looking for a relaxing vacation spot, take a trip to Isla Mujeres!

Playa Del Carmen, Mexico
You can visit Playa del Carmen by shopping online for affordable vacation packages. The locals call this area Playa because it is a beachside city, which is located on the Caribbean Sea coastlines.
If you are planning to fly to Playa del Carmen, you will need to fly to Cancun Airport and then transfer to Playa del Carmen from there. Usually, it only takes around 1 hour to travel via car. Playa stretches from the seashores to the main highway and to one of the main attractions, which is the tourist zone.
The tourist zone is along the Caribbean shoreline. Tourist buses take travelers from Playa to Benito Juarez Avenue and then to the downtown area on Fifth Avenue. Through this area, you can take a ferry from the docks on to Cozumel located near the bus transport.
Fifth Avenue is where you will find Quinto Avenida. Quinto is the main street that lies parallel to the ocean shores. From the water, it is around 500 meters. Between 5th Avenue and the water there are Bed and Breakfast places, Hotels, Rentals, Inns, restaurants and timeshares. In Playa, they call this area the “Pedestrian Walkway.”
Stores along the avenue sell souvenirs and other interesting items. You will find plenty of lodging and dining facilities here. Clothing stores along 5th Avenue sell the most popular line of clothing ranging from Cuban Cigars to European designer clothes. Rum stores and other hot spots are available here too.
The area is brilliantly vibrant, since here is where carnivals take place. Live lions, giant boa constrictors and fire eaters entertain visitors and there is a group of characters called cavalcades that parade down the Avenue.
There are plenty of nightclubs and bars along the beach. Because these party zones can get very noisy, they are located well away from the main resorts and hotels. Dive shops, hotels, convenience stores, currency exchange, tour operators, internet cafés and plenty of restaurants are along the avenue also. The beaches are open to all visitors.
The beach is very nice. In the tourist zone, the beach areas are very clean with sugar white sand. Some coral reefs can be seen at the beach. Each day the beach cleaners take care of any seaweed and debris so you can enjoy sandy white beaches while visiting Playa del Carmen.
You will also find diving, snorkeling and fishing boats in this area. The ferry dock is also close by. This is one of the busiest areas along the beach. The outer lining of the beach is the jungle area.
Playa del Carmen is a great place to go on vacation, so what are you waiting for?

Booking Air Flights Online
Step 1: Firstly, survey a variety of websites. If you book a flight to a popular city, most likely you will have a variety of airlines to choose from. You should shop around before buying an airline ticket since each airline offers a different fare. The best thing is you are never restricted to internet airlines. There are several websites available that will do your comparison shopping for you, when it comes to airline travel. With such a variety available, it pays to shop around, in order to find the best schedule and rate to suit your needs. The following are a few websites to consider when booking your flights:http://www.travelocity.com/ •http://www.expedia.com/ •http://www.lowfares.com/
Step 2: Take the time to compare flights at different times and with different carriers. Try to find the cheapest flight on line. The details of the flight are very important, make sure that you don’t just glance at them. How much time between the connections (consider the times you will have to wait between airports and flights). If you have to, will you have enough time to pick up luggage and recheck it? You should consider the connections you’re making and make certain they are necessary. While having connecting flights might save you money, they can also put more stress and a downer on your vacation even before it starts. Remember too that it is necessary to reach the airport 2 hours or more before your plane is set to take off. Will you have to keep getting up at night? Further, think about the luggage requirements. Some airlines currently allow only one piece of luggage (within a certain weight restriction), while others may charge you for each piece you check. You may believe you’ve found the best flight price but don’t forget to factor in hidden fees, wait times, travel times and other nuisance factors. By booking a more convenient flight, it may cost more money but sometimes it’s worth the extra money.
Step 3: Finalising the booking procedure. You’ll be impressed with how simple it is to book your airline tickets online. When you know which flight you want to take, all you have to do is fill in the information the website requires. You should be expected to provide information that is considered to be basic, your name, your address and your citizenship. Next, you must make sure that the particulars of your air travel are correct (this is really important) and provide payment for the flight. Before you put in your credit card details, be certain that you are content with the flight you choose, since you might not be able to change or cancel your air travel reservations. Purchase insurance without fail if there is the slightest chance that your vacation plans may not remain the same. After you’ve paid for your flight, you’ll see a confirmation page containing any important booking and telephone numbers you might need (in the event that you must alter your plans). Click “Print this page”! When you get your email confirming your booking, be sure to print it. Travel documents should be kept in a safe place until your departure day. You will want to have these with you on your trip.

Top Ten Trips For Travelling With Children
2. If this is your first package holiday with the children then it’s a good idea to plan for a slower pace than you might usually adopt on a holiday in the sun. Be realistic about how much you can arrange with your little ones in tow and keep a few free days in the event that the children need a rest.
3. Ask your tour operator if they have any family friendly offers; this can be anything from free breakfasts for children to package holiday places at discounted child rates.
4. Check the hotel that you’re staying at has child friendly entertainment. This may be in the form of a kids club or babysitting service and means that you and your partner can take a night off and enjoy a relaxing evening on your sun holiday with no interruptions.
5. Make sure that you visit a doctor at least two months before the start of your package holiday. This will enable your doctor to make sure that all your children’s vaccinations are up to date. If your child has any pre existing medical condition then this will also give your doctor ample time to ensure that you have all the information that you need in advance of your upcoming family holiday.
6. Make sure you have all the documentation that you need. If you’re the only parent travelling then you will need written consent from the other parent, regardless of your marital status. If you are widowed then you will also need to bring proof of this. Adopted children will need to travel with their adoption papers.
7. Teach your child something about your family holiday destination before you arrive. This is a great way to prepare them for what to expect and also, where appropriate, teaches them of any customs that they should be considerate of. If you’re breastfeeding then it also a good idea to research the local attitudes to this, should you need to be more discreet.
8. If the food of the country that you’re going to is radically different from what your children are used to then it’s a good idea to prepare for this. Try serving your children a few traditional dishes before you take your package holiday and research restaurants in the local area that serve more westernised food if that doesn’t work out.
9. In every destination, be sure to designate a meeting place in the event that any of your group gets lost. You can also buy wrist tags for children that include your mobile phone number and these are a great idea for younger children, should they go AWOL on your package holiday.
10. Children are very susceptible to heat and sweat a lot which can lead to prickly heat and sun stroke. You should be prepared to change your baby’s clothes up to three times a day and children’s up to twice. Choose clothes that are made from natural fibres and most importantly pack plenty of sunscreen.

The city of Rennes
There are several interesting characteristics about this city, such as, for example, its history and its constructions, some of them among the most ancient of the region.
Rennes economy is based on its agriculture as well as some industrial products. It produces an important amount of agricultural products which are consumed within the region as well as throughout several other places. Besides this, Rennes also produces farm equipment, railroad related products and cars among others.
At its origins, Rennes was the main city of the Celtic Redones. After that, this town became part of the Romans domains, and the next important historic fact happened during the XX century, when it was named capital of Brittany. this way, this city has had an important role in many époques as well as it has gone through several important changes.
During the XVIII century, around the year 1720, Rennes went through a disastrous fire which caused it to lose many of its original buildings and caused its general appearance to change. Later, during World War II, Rennes became again badly affected, this time for bombing, which again caused it to loose some of its constructions.
Although many of its original buildings and constructions disappeared, many others still remain almost unchanged. Among these constructions there are, for example, the Duchesne Tower from the XV century, the Palais Saint Georges from the XVII century, the Opera from the XIX century, many mansions from the XVII century and others from the XIX century, and several squares from the XVIII century among others.
The Chapel of Saint Yves is another great construction located in Rennes and which still shows many of its original characteristics unchanged. This building was constructed during the XV century, and is an amazing inheritance from the past. Besides the construction itself, those who approach the Cathedral of Saint Yves can also visit permanent exhibitions which take place within its walls.

MSN PPC Advertising Network Finally Debuts
MSN PPC Advertising Long-Awaited Debut Announced
You probably already know that there are really only two major players in the world of PPC advertising: Overture and Google Adwords. By the end of 2005, there will likely be a third: Microsoft's MSN Search.
Microsoft recently announced that it is launching its new MSN PPC advertising engine in Singapore and France by mid-late 2005. Smart marketers are probably already planning how they might justify advertising their products or services in Singapore to get a taste of the new service. The service's introduction into Canada, the UK, and the US may very well come before the end of 2005.
The new MSN advertising program has been long awaited. MSN is Microsoft's leading website property, and perhaps the web's most visited "portal" (website with both search and content such as news) after Yahoo! MSN's search engine accounts for one in five web searches, putting it in third place behind Google and Yahoo!
Search engine advertising mostly a two-player game
Currently, MSN shows advertising that comes from Overture, the web's largest online advertising network in terms of revenue. Overture was bought by Yahoo! a number of years ago. Since Yahoo! is the direct competitor of MSN in every way, plenty of people have been wondering why MSN didn't take its advertising program in-house long ago. It seems especially strange considering that even Lycos, whose search engine now accounts for a small fraction of total web searches, has its own advertising network.
In many minds, the fact that Microsoft would go to Overture only demonstrated how excellent an online advertising program Overture was, and just how hard it really is to set one up. Before going to Overture, MSN was getting advertising from LookSmart, an advertising network that does not own any websites that compete with Microsoft properties in any big way. Even before it had lost its largest advertising outlet, LookSmart was widely seen as a subpar second-tier engine, in a category with FindWhat or even Kanoodle. The fact that LookSmart had seemingly squandered a chance to make inroads into an online advertising market dominated by two big players cast a lot of doubt on whether there would ever be a serious challenger to Google Adwords and Overture.
What Microsoft's new advertising network means for the future
Will the new MSN advertising network succeed where so many have failed? Or will it become a bloated, relatively uncompetitive product only supported by Microsoft's vast bulk? (Not that Bill Gates has ever fathered such a bastard child.)
There's a very good reason to believe that the new advertising program bears the seeds of its own destruction, thanks to a typically Microsoftian act of overreaching and obliviousness to public opinion. That bad seed is the same bad seed that has spoiled the fruits of so many internet marketing labors: behavioral and demographic targeting, which always seems to disagree with some people's stomachs, no matter how delicately it is arranged in the bowl. (Editor's note: too extended a metaphor? Well, website copywriters have egos, too, you know, just like the rest of the web dev. community. At least you didn't have to sit through five minutes of flash animation to read this.)
Next: MSN PPC Advertising to Incorporate Demographic & Behavioral Targeting: Killer App. or Achilles Heel?
Microsoft's press release announcing the new MSN advertising program is also worth reading if you're that into this.

Personalized Christmas Gifts - A Few Suggestions
If you are not all to sure what to pick for them, here are a couple of suggestions.
For mothers and grandmother - and perhaps even for some men - you could perhaps buy a personalized serving tray, or personalized platters and salad bowls. Or why not a unique container, that can also appeal to kids? Such containers can hold candy or other small snacks and you'll find them in many shapes and styles. Also for the personalization, there are different styles in lettering to choose from.
If your loved one is appreciative of art, you can maybe get him or her a personalized fine art print. He or she will then become a part of the art process. His or her name will be somewhere in the print, or they'll get a special mentioning in the marquee. This makes a very unique gift. You can also add a frame, to finish off the product. The only thing left to do then, is to hang the picture on the wall, for everyone to admire. Most companies who render such services, work with premium hard paper or canvas-like rag paper. The frames are always in wood. And even better, there will be a 'money back' guarantee. You may be assured that the product you ordered is of the highest quality, or you will get your money back. Paper, ink and handling of the purchase should always be of the highest standards.
Another nice gift item are personalized decorative flags for Christmas (or Hanukkah for the Jewish community). You can include the names of the members of your family on them, and even better, you can use them more than once! They come if different materials, like polyester or canvas, and the size will be around 30" x 42". The print is on one side and the sides of these banners or flags are double stitched. Most companies offer custom design. The poles and mounting brackets will probably not be included with the flags or banners, but you can also find them at the site where you order the print work.
Christmas tree ornaments, personalized with your loved one's name, are also a fine present. There is such a variety in shapes and forms. You can find ornaments in glass- plain or beveled - in the form of stars, bells, hearts. Or you can buy them in German crystal, and even in ceramics. There are lots of motives and the choice is entirely up to you - most likely, depending on your budget. Just imagine how the tree will look with all these fine ornaments, which have your name, and that of your wife, your children.

Shedding Light on the History of the Light Bulb and Its Bright Future
First Light: The Dim Beginning
It was a dark and stormy--well, it was certainly a dark night, but that would soon change. The year was 1809, and an English scientist by the name of Humphry Davy was about to make the world a brighter place. He had come up with a rudimentary battery to which he attached some wires. In between these wires he affixed two pieces of charcoal, which--we can only assume--surprised him when they began to glow. Thus the light bulb was conceived, or at least electric arc, the phenomenon that made the charcoal glow for Davy, was discovered.
It wasn't until 1820 that Warren De la Rue attempted to produce the first incandescent light bulb. Enclosing a platinum coil inside of an evacuated tube, he ran a current through and there was light. The longevity had improved greatly from Davy's carbon strips, but the cost of platinum was prohibitive.
Success! A Little More Light on the Subject
With so many scientists around the globe working to produce a practical light bulb, it was only a matter of time before somebody got it right. In 1879, this happened--twice. Thomas Alva Edison and Wilson Swan had independent breakthroughs. Both designs were based on a carbon fiber filament, which was derived from cotton. Though a huge step in the right direction, this bulb lasted a scant 13.5 hours. Edison redoubled his efforts to create a longer-lasting light, and only one year later, he developed a bamboo-derived filament that could last for over one thousand hours.
More developments came, though years later. Karl Auer used an osmium filament in 1898. In 1903, Siemens and Halske, a German engineering team, used tantalum. Both theirs and Auer's developments improved light bulb burn time.
1906 through 1910 saw the development of ductile tungsten and then its use in a light bulb. Thanks to the efforts of William Coolidge and the General Electric Company, this became the practical, long burning solution that would light our way for most of the twentieth century. Some improvements were made to prevent the tungsten from burning up and coating the inside of bulb with soot. The gases that were added to stop the soot, argon and nitrogen, were also found to carry heat away from the filament, making it last even longer.
Seeing Things in a Different Light
When all of this excited about incandescent lighting was going around, circa 1857, a French physicist by the name of Alexandre E. Becquerel was putting his time into fluorescence and phosphorescence. He experimented with various tubes and coatings, but never quite had success.
A German physicist, Julius Plucker, and a glassblower, Heinrich Geissler, got together in the mid 1800s to further Becquerel's work. They found that passing a current through a glass tube containing tiny amounts of a gas made light. Much like the French forerunner, they did not have much success. There were, of course, many others attempting to produce practical vapor lamps, but they too failed.
Without all of their work, though, Peter Cooper Hewitt wouldn't have been able to produce the world's first mercury vapor lamp in 1901. This lamp was the predecessor to the fluorescent lights we have today, which use electricity to excite mercury vapor, creating luminescence.
Beginning to See the Light: A Brighter Future Emerges
Electroluminescence, discovered by Englishman Henry J. Round in 1907, doesn't just sound cool; it's the guiding principle behind light emitting diodes (LEDs). The first LED was created independently of Henry J. Round by a Russian scientist named Oleg Vladimirovich Losev in the mid 1920s. No practical use came about for decades, though.
In 1955, Rubin Braunstein observed that simple diodes using gallium antimonide (GaSb), gallium arsenide (GaAs), indium phosphide (InP), and silicon-germanium (SiGe) all produced infrared light. It was in 1961 that the first infrared LED was patented by Bob Biard and Gary Pittman; it used GaAs.
All of this intensely scientific research culminated in the 1962 with Nick Holonyak Jr. inventing the first visible-spectrum LED. He earned the title, Father of the Light-Emitting Diode, for this one. It wasn't until 1976 that a high-brightness, high-efficiency LED was invented by T.P. Pearsall. Despite the prohibitive price at the time, Hewlett Packard used red LEDs in their early handheld calculators' alphanumeric displays.
Since the birth of practical LEDs in the 1960s, their efficiency and light output have increased exponentially, doubling about every 36 months. Organic LEDs (OLEDs) are now being used to make the thinnest, highest-definition displays ever created, and they are only one of the many LED innovations.
LEDs Light the Way
LED light bulbs have become extremely efficient, now boasting an 80 to 90 percent power savings over the archaic-seeming incandescent bulb, while producing similar brightness. Not only that, but LED light bulbs can last longer than 100,000 hours, which is more than eleven and a half years of constant burn.
Their versatility is staggering. Used by hikers in ultra-light, ultra-bright headlamps; car manufacturers as stylish, highly functional lights; and engineers in state-of-art fiber-optic technology, these little light bulbs can do pretty much anything. They can even replace nearly every other light bulb already in use, from your home to your local stadium.
Another advantage, LED lights are environmentally friendly and not just for their power sipping ways. The push towards compact fluorescent bulbs has put mercury in homes across the nation. LED light bulbs last longer, light instantly, run silently, replace a wider array of other bulbs (including halogen lamps), are more durable because of their solid-state design, and don't contain toxic elements.
The next time a light goes out in your home, consider replacing it with an LED light bulb. It could be your brightest idea yet.
